Reading & Writing
building block one
To begin my journey in answering my compelling question, I needed to further understand how writing played an important role after readers read and analyzed a text. At the start of NLGL program in my digital literacies course, I created an inquiry question centered around this idea. "How does writing about what you've read improve your reading comprehension?" Through this process, I also inquired about how adding technology tool as a platform for writing would encourage my writers to share what they think or feel about books or articles read in class. I found that writing about what you have read, helps to express what the reader understands about a text. I also noticed that my students were more motivated to write responses to our reading when they were able to use a technology tool to communicate with others and share their thoughts. By doing all of these things, I helped set a purpose for writing and provided a meaningful audience for my students. My initial probe on this topic was just the start of my focus toward my compelling question. I found myself wanting to know more about writing instruction, which lead me to my second building block in the program.
